Chronic Diseases and Your Mouth (Video)
Hello, friends. Today, I want to speak to you about what happens with our bodies and what happens with chronic diseases. How is that all related to dentistry, right? You’re like, “You’re not even a real doctor, Dr. Patel. You’re a dentist. Why are you telling me about chronic diseases?” And it’s because, my friend, we have now discovered, and science has now discovered, that a lot of chronic illnesses are coming from the mouth. And when I say the mouth, I really mean this entire cavity over here. Now, we have the brain which just has a lot of cranial nerves. We also have the nose where we breathe from, and that’s one thing we cannot live without; it’s called air. Now, thirdly, we have the microbiome, which is our good or gut healthy bacteria, which is what we really need, and that’s what we’re looking at. So very important as you connect the dots between holistic health and also chronic illnesses and your mouth.
So your mouth is really important because the way your face comes together and your brain comes together, you actually have cranial nerves which exit the body. The most important cranial nerve we’re looking at really is the vagus nerve, which is your rest and digest nerve. That’s very important because if you’re not resting and digesting, you’re in fight or flight, which creates a lot of stress on your body. If you have a lot of stress on your body, you’re going to be creating chronic illness.
Now, for example, with patients with hypothyroidism, what we find is that they have a traumatic event that occurs and they end up being stressed for about 18 months to two years, and then their thyroid goes lower. It’s because our bodies are designed to fix themselves for a short period of time. It’s just that when our bodies are under chronic stress or under chronic disease, we’re not able to heal very well, and that leads to diseases.
We also find patients who have hypothyroidism will probably end up with three autoimmune disorders, and a lot of times, we find eczema is very common. We also find arthritis is very common. And now these are all diseases that are preventable by making sure that we’re nose breathing, making sure we’re staying healthier, we’re managing our stress levels, and making sure that we’re in the rest and digest phase of our bodies.
