A Root Canal Should Be a Last Resort: Not a First Choice
I believe strongly in helping my patients keep their teeth as healthy and strong as possible. Preventive dental exams, deep cleanings, and other minimally-invasive procedures are designed to minimize decay and disease. Early detection of cavities allows me to use smaller fillings that remove the bare minimum of healthy tooth structure.
A root canal procedure should only be performed when absolutely necessary. And unfortunately, in cases of advanced tooth decay, they are the recommended treatment and produce the best results.
If you’ve been told you need a root canal or have questions about how to prevent cavities and tooth decay, contact Green Dentistry and talk to Dr. Patel about your options.
Dr. Patel, San Francisco’s leading holistic dentist
When tooth decay reaches the inner layers of the teeth, a simple filling can no longer be used to repair the damage. Instead, a root canal procedure may be recommended to remove the decay and restore the tooth.
Also known as an endodontic procedure, a root canal treatment involves removing and cleaning the infected pulp. Then the tooth is prepared to receive a crown that will restore the tooth’s shape, function, and appearance.
CEREC Single Visit Crowns
Beautiful Durable Crowns in Minutes. No Waiting & No Temporary!
In the past, crowns were made in dental laboratories and took about 2 or 3 weeks to finish. While waiting, you’d wear an inconvenient temporary crown. When your crown was ready, you’d go back to the dentist to have it placed.
Today, using 3D imaging technology and the CEREC system, Dr. Patel can create and install a beautiful, durable biocompatible crown in just minutes!
It’s amazing! Contact Dr. Patel for a consultation to learn more about CEREC technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the Difference Between a Root Canal and a Filling?
A filling is used to remove a small amount of tooth decay. A root canal on the other hand is used when decay advances to the inner pulp of the tooth. The decay is removed and the tooth’s structure, function, and appearance are restored using a dental crown.
I Have Great Brushing and Flossing Habits. Why Do I Need One?
While root canal treatment can be needed due to untreated and advanced tooth decay, there are other causes. Your genetic makeup may leave you predisposed to tooth decay no matter how well you brush and floss. In addition, many root canals are the result of chips or cracks in the tooth caused by an accident or injury.
Do I Have To Get a Temporary?
No! Using the CEREC system, we can create your finished crown in just minutes. You won’t have to wait for another appointment and we won’t have to bother with a goopy, sticky mold to make a temporary crown. Instead we’ll use a high-tech 3D imaging system to take a picture of your mouth and a computer program will be used to turn a block of biocompatible ceramic resin into your finished crown.
The results are incredible! CEREC crowns:
- Last for years
- Look amazing
- Function just like your natural teeth!
